We were welcomed by the Street Children and then a welcome address by the Representative of Our Daughter of Charity of St. Vincent The paul, an initiative in the Catholic Church family. We got an instruction: “NO VIDEOS”, but pictures are allowed, because of the sensitivity of putting out the faces or images of the Street Children. The Centre is headed by Reverend Sr. Josephine. And we had about seven (7) Care takers during the sensitization and over forty-seven (47) in attendance.

In his words, we are here to identify with the vulnerable and we see you all as family. The essence of our presence is not only to support you with palliatives in form of Food items, but to also sensitize you on the dreaded trending global virus (coronavirus/COVID-19). This global pandemic has killed over millions of people have died out of being affected by the virus. So, we came with Experts, a Medical Doctor (Dr. Grace), with other knowledgeable Volunteers to share some insights on COVID-19, that will you all stay safe. The Joint Action Civil Society Coalition calls on all Nigerians to join in the commemoration of the third National Day of Mourning on May 28, 2020. 

Our call comes as the country continues to experience an exponentially rise in violence, perpetrated by organized criminal groups with a monumental loss of lives, livelihoods, and property. For the most part, the destruction associated with this spiraling crisis of violence and mass killings has been grossly under-reported. Even with the suppression of information on these killings, it is quite clear that the toll of killings has risen dramatically in recent times. Between 2018 and now, we have recorded the deaths of at least seven thousand nine hundred and four (7,904) Nigerians to violent killings across the country; with the first quarter of 2020 alone making up about one thousand four hundred and sixteen (1,416) of these deaths. From Akwa-Ibom to Zamfara, Nigerians wake up daily to fresh news of mass atrocities which are barely acknowledged by the government and a vast majority of fellow citizens.  This is an anomaly that must end.

1. Some people still don’t believe that COVID-19 exist, but for me as a Traditional Head, we had to embark on Community sensitization. I oversee over 33 Communities under my care.
2. There are those coming in Rivers State through the border, they under-cut border check and break into the State.
3. People think, they are the only one’s suffering; like, Hunger Strike.

The Government of Rivers State declared “TOTAL LOCKDOWN” in the city of Port Harcourt and Obio-Akpor Local Government Area on Monday (4^th May 2020) to take effect on Thursday (7^th May 2020). Today (9^th May, 2020) is Day Three of the Lockdown and the experience has been awful. These are the two major cities in the State. The painful part of the Lockdown is that the Government did not provide adequate palliative measures in place for the citizens. The shops, Markets and existing businesses shutdown, because of the Lockdown. The big question, is how will Citizens survive? This is a city, an urban area. The Head Chief of the Community, welcomed the team of Refined Foundation. The Team Lead of Refined Foundation (Ada Tina Anyanwu) shared with the Head Chief, reasons for coming to the Community for sensitization, she re-emphasized that the Communities are neglected in the area of Proper information dissemination.
